sticks & stones + stalks & stems

We're so lucky here in Brisbane…. winter is just a slight chill in the air, tempered by the 'toasty' warmth of the sun.

It's the time of year when those winter white orchids bloom beautifully.
I knew my local florists, James and Phil....nestled in a quaint timber cottage down by the river....would stock them.

Their 'blossom abode'  (http://stalksandstems.com.au/) is filled with fragrance, colour, texture and cosiness.....branch adornments et al dangle from the ceiling, shelves are packed with aromatic potions and treats, and exotic and native blooms are piled high in one corner.  I love the place!
I watch as much care is taken to position the smooth, delicate winter whites into textured, concrete vessels.....and then, over on a hidden shelf, apple-green lacy leaves, dangling on fine black stalks, take my fancy.
She's a little maidenhair fern....and we place her ever so carefully into a perfectly shaped natural bark cup!
James conjuring up his magical blossom creations.
Phil about to 'vessel up' those winter white beauties.
So next time you're down by the jetty.....go in for a floral dose of gorgeousness.....massively beautiful sticks, stones + perfumed stalks and stems!
Back at home....nestled in their textured vessels, these beauties are on an orbital path….searching for their own 'toasty' spot of winter sun.  Position, position, position….James and Phil remind me.
Sticks & stones....and stalks & stems....I'm mad about them!

Ciao

  2. Hi, dear Robyn! As you might have gathered, I needed to take a one week blog hiatus to entertain out of state guests. It worked out perfectly to leave Janie Junebug in charge of my blog. Thank you for your patience in waiting for my return and thank you very much for the extraordinary comment you left on JJ's guest post! She and I greatly appreciate your contributions to the discussion of that important topic.

Brisbane must have a milder climate than that of Central and SW Gulf Coast Florida. It is not uncommon here for the temperature to drop below freezing in winter and I have seen snow flurries a few times since I moved down from Pennsylvania in 1984.

I love your charming winter flowers and the way they are displayed at James & Phil's cottage shop and in your dwelling. When Mrs. Shady and I built our house we knew that high ceilings are a must. I love vertical lines. If Mrs. Shady allowed me to do the decorating I would have more (and taller) vertical accents and fill some of the space near our vaulted ceilings with dramatic features like those shown here.

Thank you again for the tremendous comment on SDMM in my absence, dear friend Robyn. I hope you are enjoying your weekend and I'll connect with you soon!

    1. And thanks so much for your comment Shady.

I really enjoyed JJ's guest post....what an extraordinary woman she is! To share her story was brave....and it was my pleasure to support her.

Snow flurries hey!!!! Not sure I'd enjoy those Shady. I'll be in the garden this weekend.....winter coming to an end with temperatures of 26 degrees. Just perfect!

      Ciao

  3. Hi Robyn and many thanks for stopping by A Breath of Fresh Air and leaving your welcomed comment.
I'm loving your amazing florist friends' work with flowers and natural accessories such as the bark pots - really exquisite.
You live in a beautiful place - I've visited Brisbane (2011) staying on the Gold Coast at Broad Beach, and the amazing surrounding sub-tropical rainforest area inland and toward Mt. Waring - all just stunningly beautiful. You can see my pix from there in my Jan.and Feb. 2012 archive!

I hope we can keep in touch - I look forward to 'following' you.
    Best wishes - Mary

  5. Your flower pictures are outstanding ! Such color and form. I always thought that if I ever went to Australia Brisbane would be the place I’d like to visit first, the other place being Tasmania. Unfortunately it is not on the way home to Paris – sigh!

    1. Darling Vagabonde...thank you for your lovely comment. Yes I think you would love Brisbane...and Tassie....both gorgeous. And the gardens in both locations are glorious. If you want a little Parisian 'fix'....then perhaps Melbourne, Australia may be the place....gorgeous Chestnut trees and fabulous architecture everywhere!
